Teaching your dog commands is not only beneficial for you as a dog owner but it is also beneficial for your dog. We all know that a well behaved dog is more accepted by the community when we take him out to pet friendly stores, restaurants and parks but did you know that teaching your dog commands also keeps him happy? Dogs are extremely intelligent and work oriented animals, occupying their minds with new commands and challenges is one sure fire way to keep your canine companion happy and a great way to give him a more fulfilled life! So what commands can you teach your dog? Below are just some of the commands you can teach your dog!
Sit
Stay
Come
No
Off
Potty
Down (lay down)
Wait (helpful when giving food)
Gently (helpful when interacting with young children or taking treats)
Go
Place (teaching your dog to go to a designated place and wait there)
Leash
Speak
Roll over
Quiet
Shake
Fetch
Seek / Go Find… (a fun command to teach when you play hide and seek)
Leave It (Helpful if you have a dog that loves to pick up food or trash on walks)
Drop it / Give it / Thank you (teaching your dog to give you whatever is in their mouth)
Load Up (Get in the car)
Scoot your butt / Move (I use this for Jet when he is in the way or has decided to take my seat)
Left / Right (helpful when walking)
Stop! (helpful in all contexts to get your dog to freeze in place)
Stay Close
Heel
Look / Look at Me (helpful in getting your dog’s attention)
Finished (helpful in letting your dog know he has completed what’s expected of him…or that the food is all gone!)
Kisses (This one is gross to some but Jet learned kisses as a nose bump instead of licking so it’s not too sloppy)
Bedtime
Go Ask… (I use “go ask daddy” if I am tied up and Jet needs to potty)
Water (I taught Jet this one because at times he plays too hard and forgets to rehydrate)
As you can see there are endless commands you can teach your dog, above is just a sampling of some to get you started! Remember to enjoy the teaching and learning process, the more you are able to communicate with your dog the happier you will both be!
